Pain after tooth extraction

Some pain and swelling can be expected after an extraction. Arrange an urgent dental assessment if:

  • Pain becomes severe or is getting worse.
  • Pain relief is not controlling the discomfort.
  • Swelling is increasing.
  • You develop a bad taste or discharge.
  • You develop a fever or feel unwell.
  • Bleeding persists.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket is a painful complication that can occur after a tooth has been removed. Possible symptoms include:

  • Significant pain developing after extraction.
  • Pain that worsens after initially improving.
  • Pain spreading towards the ear or jaw.
  • An unpleasant taste or smell.

If you think you may have dry socket, arrange a dental assessment rather than trying to treat the socket yourself.

Bleeding after extraction

A small amount of blood mixed with saliva can be normal after an extraction. If the socket begins actively bleeding:

  • Sit upright.
  • Place clean gauze or a clean folded cloth over the socket.
  • Bite down firmly and continuously.
  • Avoid repeatedly removing it to check the area.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy and will not stop.

What if the tooth cannot be saved?

If a tooth develops a problem and cannot be predictably retained, we can discuss extraction and replacement options.

For suitable patients, this may include immediate dental implant placement at the time of extraction, with a temporary tooth also possible where clinically appropriate.
